Privacy Policy

The short version

The Heat Pump Check tool runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you enter (your city, home size, heating fuel, annual bill, and home age) never leave your device. We do not collect, store, sell, or share that information. There is no signup, no email field, and no account to create.

The site does use third-party services for traffic statistics and advertising. Those services may place cookies on your device and collect anonymous usage data. The sections below explain how each works and how to opt out if you prefer.

Information we collect directly

We collect nothing directly. The check's inputs are processed in JavaScript on your computer and discarded when you close the page. We do not have a database of who used the check or what they entered.

If you contact us by email, we obviously have your email address. We keep correspondence for as long as needed to respond, and we do not add email addresses to any mailing list.

Information collected by third-party services

Web hosting

Like every website, our hosting provider logs basic information about each request. Your IP address, the page you requested, the time, your browser type. This is standard server log behaviour, retained briefly for security and traffic analysis, then deleted. We don't actively review these logs.

Analytics

We use a privacy-friendly analytics service to count visits and understand which pages people read. The service does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors. It collects aggregated, anonymous statistics like total visits per day, top pages, and referring sources.

Advertising

Display advertising on this site is provided by Google AdSense. AdSense uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, including personalized ads based on your prior browsing on other sites. These cookies are set by Google, not by us, and Google's privacy practices apply.

You can review and adjust Google's ad personalization at adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of personalized advertising entirely at aboutads.info/choices or youradchoices.ca/choices for Canadian residents.

Disabling personalized ads doesn't prevent ads from appearing on the site. It only means the ads you see will not be based on your browsing history. They will be selected based on the page content (heat pumps, home efficiency) instead of you.

Cookies

The site itself does not set cookies. Third-party services described above may set cookies in your browser. Most modern browsers let you view, delete, and block cookies through the privacy settings. Doing so will not break the check or any of the article content, but may affect ad display.

Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through this site, please contact us and we will delete any record we have.

Data outside Canada

The third-party services we use (Google, hosting providers, analytics) may process data outside Canada, including in the United States. By using the site, you understand that data may be processed in countries with different privacy frameworks than Canada's.

Your rights under PIPEDA

Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) gives you the right to access personal information an organization holds about you and to ask for corrections. Because we don't collect personal information directly, there's nothing to access. For information third-party services hold, contact those services directly using the links above.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a substantive way (for example, by adding a new third-party service that collects information) we'll update this page and note the date of the change at the top. Continued use of the site after a change indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
