Terms of Use

The rules for using this site, the limits of what the check can do, and the things we are not responsible for. Read these before relying on the output for a major decision.

The short version

This site provides educational information and a free tool that estimates heat pump savings. The estimates are based on typical conditions for a home of your size, age, and location. They are not engineering reports. They are not a quote. They are not a guarantee of savings.

You can rely on the check and articles to inform your decision and to compare against contractor quotes. You cannot rely on them as the only basis for spending tens of thousands of dollars on equipment. For that, you need a written F280 heat load calculation and a contractor quote.

Acceptable use

You may use this site for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may share links to articles. You may quote short passages with attribution and a link back. You may screenshot the check's output for your own records or to share with a contractor.

You may not scrape the site, republish articles in whole or in large part without permission, redistribute the check's code, or use the site to harass anyone we mention. Brand names mentioned on the site are the trademarks of their respective owners and we do not claim affiliation.

Accuracy of estimates

The check estimates savings using a simplified version of the residential heat load model published in CSA F280. It uses your actual heating bill to calibrate the estimate to your real-world conditions, but it cannot account for things it doesn't know: your thermostat habits, the condition of your insulation in detail, the orientation of your home, internal heat gains from appliances and occupants, or any one-off circumstances unique to your dwelling.

The result is a reasonable ballpark, not a precise number. Treat the savings range as a guide and use a contractor's F280 report and quote as the binding numbers for any actual purchase decision.

Rebate information

Rebate amounts shown by the check and discussed in articles reflect the best information we have from official program websites as of the date noted on the check. Programs change without notice. Funding can run out. Eligibility criteria can shift. You should always verify current amounts and your specific eligibility on the program's own website before making purchase decisions or signing contracts.

We are not affiliated with any rebate program. We do not process applications, advocate for appeals, or guarantee that you will receive the amounts shown. If a contractor tells you they "guarantee" a rebate, ask them to put that guarantee in writing. Most legitimate contractors will not.

Contractor referrals

The site may, in the future, include affiliate links to home service marketplaces. We do not vet individual contractors. If you contact a contractor through a link on this site, you are doing business with them, not with us. Verify licensing, certifications (HRAI, TSSA, provincial trade boards), insurance, and references before signing any contract.

Disclaimer

The information on this site is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. The site, its authors, and its operators are not liable for any decision you make based on the content, including any financial loss, equipment damage, missed rebate deadlines, or installation problems. The check's estimates are for educational comparison only.

If you have a specific technical question about your home, consult a licensed mechanical contractor, a Registered Energy Advisor, or your provincial utility's customer service team. If you are in a situation involving safety (suspected carbon monoxide, electrical service overload, refrigerant leak), contact a qualified professional or emergency services first and worry about the math later.

The site links to government program websites, manufacturer information, standards bodies, and other resources we believe are useful. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, or availability. Links do not imply endorsement of any specific product or service.

We may update these terms over time. Continued use of the site after a change indicates acceptance of the revised terms.
